Vaishnavas celebrate the full moon day of Shravan month (August-September) as the appearance day of Lord Balarama. This year (2009) it is celebrated on 5th August 2009. It falls exactly eight days before the appearance of Lord Sri Krishna i.e., Sri Krishna Janmastami. The Legend of Sri Balarama Jayanti: Balarama spent his childhood as a cowherd boy with his brother Krishna and friends. He killed several demons like Dhenukasura. Balarama’s chief weapon is ploughshare (hal). He is also called as ‘Haldhari’. Celebrations for Sri Balarama Jayanti:
Sri Balarama Jayanti is celebrated as a mark of advent of Balarama who is celebrated as the elder brother of the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna. Balarama was the seventh child of Vasudev and Devaki who were confined to prison by the evil king Kamsa. Kamsa killed six children of Devaki and the seventh child was transferred miraculously from Devaki’s womb to the womb of Rohini, who desired a child of her own. Balarama is also called as Sankarsana which describes the transfer of the child from one womb to another. The child was named Rama, but because of the child’s strength he was called Balarama (Strong Rama), Baladeva or Balabhadra.
Balarama Jayanti is celebrated with great joy and happiness. On this day the devotees fast till noon. The temple and altar are nicely decorated with leaves and flowers. A pompous bathing ceremony is held wherein the Deities of Krishna and Balarama are bathed with milk, dahi, ghee, a lot of honey and sugarwater. Devotees enthusiastically dance, sing and chant the Holy Names of Krishna and Balarama. A discourse of wonderful pastimes and qualities of Balarama is held in the temple which the devotees rejoice. After that the devotees break the fast by drinking charanamrta (bathed water of Deities). The devotees cook hundreds of wonderful preparations for the pleasure of Balarama and a lot of honey is offered to Him as He likes honey very much. The sanctified food called Prasadam is honoured and distributed among the devotees.
